To create novel physical properties by careful control of atomic-scale structure. This is the basic mission of materials science and the mantra of technological innovation in the 21st century.

Our research group uses theoretical methods to obtain atomic-scale design principles for novel thin film materials, semiconductors, and others. We employ techniques from computational physics (mainly quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics) and applied mathematics (mainly statistics, machine learning, and probability), and develop our own techniques whenever needed. We work in close collaboration with experimental groups from academia and industry, and ultimately aim to establish a paradigm of 'theory-driven materials science'.
